Frequently asked questions.

What kind of church is Emmanuel?

Emmanuel is a warm and inviting congregation located in the heart of Livonia, Michigan. As a community of faith, we are blessed to have approximately 450 baptized members who come from all walks of life. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, our worship services were attended by an average of 150-175 devoted individuals each week. We invite you to join us at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where you will find a loving and inclusive community that celebrates the rich tapestry of family life. Together, we can grow in faith, find comfort in fellowship, and embark on a lifelong journey of love and service.

We are affiliated with the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) which has its national headquarters in Chicago. In Michigan, we are part of the Southeast Michigan Synod.

What time is worship?

Every Sunday, rain or shine, we come together as a congregation to lift our voices in praise and worship. At 8 AM, we gather for our traditional worship service, steeped in the rich tradition of the ELW hymnal. The hymns resound through the sanctuary, filling the space with timeless melodies that have inspired generations of believers. The liturgy guides our worship, connecting us with centuries of worshipers who have come before us.
For those seeking a more contemporary experience, our 10 AM service offers a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. The sounds of modern music fill the air, as our praise band leads the congregation in singing songs of joy and celebration. The format of this service is slightly more relaxed, allowing for a greater sense of community and interaction.
We extend a warm invitation to you, dear visitor, to join us at either, or both, of our services. Come and experience the beauty and reverence of our traditional worship or immerse yourself in the dynamic and spirited gatherings of our contemporary service. We encourage you to explore both and discover what resonates with your soul. The choice is yours, and we are here to welcome you with open arms, no matter which path you choose.

What should I wear?

Come as you are or how you feel most comfortable. If you prefer to wear jeans, you won't be alone. Our church welcomes everyone, regardless of how they choose to dress. We understand that some may feel more at ease in casual attire, and we want to create an accepting and inclusive environment for all. So, whether you prefer jeans, a dress, or something in between, know that you will be embraced and valued as part of our community. So come, just as you are, and join us in worshiping together.

Where should I park?

Visitor parking is available in the first row closest to the entrance. Handicap parking is also available on the right as you enter the parking lot.

Is Emmanuel handicap accessible?

Our facility is on one level with and very accessible to varying physical needs. Hearing devices are available for worship services - just ask an usher!

Are there worship opportunities for youth?

Throughout the school year (September - May), we offer Sunday School during our 10 AM service for preschool through high school. Youth begin in the worship space and go to Sunday School before the first reading. During the summer, we have VBS and summer camp opportunities.

All services are welcome to young children. We have long believed an empty seat makes more noise than a crying child. Don’t feel upset or embarrassed! Activity bags are available on the way into the worship space, scribble cards are in the front of most seats, and we have a nursery available during the 10 AM worship service staffed by volunteers. If you don’t want to part from your child (or they don’t want to part from you!), our Prayground is in the back of the worship space! The Prayground is an area with soft carpet, tables, materials for drawing/coloring, stuffed animals, and other toys that are more on the quiet side to keep a young one occupied while allowing you to continue enjoying worship.
