It’s Been Awhile!

I know that it’s been awhile since I did my last website post. Like many of us, summer activities with family and friends, vacations and trips, projects around the house as well as other things begin to take over your life! Before long, you realize it has been awhile since you really attended to your spiritual life and growth. It is no different for leaders, our lives can get overwhelmed with church-related responsibilities and activities as well as personal responsibilities and activities that “it’s been awhile” since we really attended to our own care. Don’t get me wrong, spending time with my family or spending time in the UP on the lake or being a part of an inter-generational event at church definitely strengthen my life in many ways. But the planning and execution of such events can also be very exhausting and lead to feeling fatigued and wore out.

But the great thing about our God is that our God is a God that is always there waiting for us to return! One of the main themes of the Bible is the continual process of “returning” that we see happening between God and God’s people. Jacob returns home to reconcile with his brother Esau. David repents of a horrific adulterous affair and murder to return to God in despair. The prodigal returns home after squandering his inheritance to find his father waiting with open arms. And at the end of the Bible in the book of Revelation, we are given the promise of the ultimate “return” to the garden paradise of the new heaven and new earth that awaits God’s people at the end of all times. Our God is a patient God, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

Most lives of faith are filled with “returns”. Even the pillars of faith in the bible occasionally found themselves having to return to God and start again. Our God does not desire the death of sinners or the pain of worn out, restless souls, but rather that we continually return to God and find grace, forgiveness and new life!

Is it time for you to return to God in some way?  Has it been awhile since you have attended to your spiritual life and health in an intentional way? Now is the time, now is the day to return to God’s open arms. As we start a new school year and program year at many of our churches, what better time to return to worship, bible study, service or fellowship and find life and find it abundantly!
